St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Parish . Madison, Wisconsin
We, the faith community of Saint Thomas Aquinas, united with the Church throughout the world, are called by God to bring the Good News of the Gospel into the life of our community.
We strive to serve each other in a spirit of compassion and love, and to enhance justice, peace and healing in our midst.
We strive also, through our common prayer and worship with the Lord who nourishes us, to enable the gifts of the Spirit to emerge from each one of us and become more fully the disciples of Christ.

Bereavement Support

Westside Catholic Bereavement Ministry

Come, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28

The Westside Catholic parishes sponsor Bereavement Ministry at various times throughout the year for anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one.

Varying in length and in topics covered, each series offers a supportive and faith-filled setting in which to learn about the grief process and to share your experience of grief with others. The facilitators of this peer ministry are parish staff and/or trained parish members who have also experienced the pain of the loss of a loved one.

If you are feeling the loneliness of grief, you are invited to consider participating in any of these opportunities. The following overview offers you a picture of what will be available through the next 12 months, so that whenever you feel ready, you can take a new step on your journey to renewed hope.

Topics may include:

  • The Process of Grieving
  • Understanding the Emotions of Grief
  • Crazy is Normal
  • Finding the Hope of Our Catholic Faith
  • Surviving Stress, Loneliness and Guilt
  • Special Kinds of Grief / Handling Holidays
  • Children and Grief
  • The Spiritual Elements of Grief
  • The Communion of Saints
  • Making Memories… Keeping Memories

As you plan, please keep in mind that we recommend attending all the sessions in a series. If your loss was very recent, you may need time before attending such a group. We encourage you to call to discuss this if you are uncertain.

God comforts us in all our troubles so that we, in turn, may comfort others.
II Corinthians 1:4

Our faith can play an important role following the death of a loved one. Being with others who share the experience of losing someone close to them also helps ease the feelings of loneliness.
